  • Gear ratio for crankbaits? by mathew scullawlMember Profile, 2/8/2010 15:40 CT
What gear ratio does everyone use for throwing their crankbaits? I like a 5.0:1 so its a little easier for me to keep the retrieve and a slower pace. I was looking at some replacement reels lately and man its hard to find a 5.0:1. Just got me to wondering what other anglers use.

Matt, Ardent makes a 5.0:1 that will cast a mile. They have it in all three baitcaster series.

John, I have two crankbait rods so I really will only have two reels. Probably like them to be the same. Thats why I thought maybe 5.0 :1 was the best because you can speed up or slow down. With a 6.3:1 or a 7:1 I feel like I am fighting retrieving too fast. The lack of 5.0 :1 reels out there had me doubting. Dont know I have seen a 3.8:1 in a while.

    Who makes Ardent?

I use a 6.3:1 for crank baits, just depends on your own retrieve speed (how fast you're turning that handle)

Chris nailed it with the Ardent. If you want to go cheaper, the pro qualifier from Bass Pro Shops comes in a 4.7:1 and a 5.2:1.

I was at Bass Pro in Springfield yesterday and the fishing manager there told me that the Pro Qualifier is actually the same as the Revo STX and is even made by Abu Garcia. Bass Pro had them make it in those two lower gears just for this reason. Revo STX $200, Pro Qualifier $100. He also told me that the BPS fluorocarbon is made by Seaguar and is actually the exact same product as Seaguar Carbon Pro 100%. And then he told me not to tell anyone else!! hahaha!! Hope he doesn't see this!! ripalip.

Shimano offers their Curado in a 5.0:1 ratio. then you have the winch by Abu (skeet reese model) i believe it is a 5.4:1 ratio. I use the Curado

Mathew I just got thru purchasing two new David Fritts reels off of ebay that are 5.1 and 4.71 that are suppose to be awsum crankbait reels. I like em slow myself. Mite check em out. I have found lots of other name brand reels at a descent price. Mostly all for under $100.
